# How to see who changed a product in Shopify

Shopify's activity log names the person, app or channel behind an action. How to open it, what it leaves out, and what Actorly adds for product changes.

The quickest route is Shopify's own activity log: go to Settings, then General, and open the activity log link under Resources. Each event names the person, app or channel that took the action, but it does not show the old and new value. Actorly keeps the old and new value of a product change and, when Shopify reports who made it, shows that name beside a confidence word, or says Unknown.

## Where to find Shopify's activity log

You need the Home and Store settings, Manage settings permissions to open it. If you are the owner you already have them.

1. In your Shopify admin, go to **Settings**.
2. Click **General**.
3. In the **Resources** section, open the activity log link.

Shopify describes the page as a list of the date and time of recent actions taken by the store owner or a user in your admin. Each event includes the name of the person, app or channel that took the action. Examples on Shopify's page include deleting a product and changing a store setting.

## What the log does not do

Shopify's help page lists the limits plainly. The page is view-only, so you cannot expand or click an event. The information cannot be exported. A maximum of 250 results is shown, and it cannot show admin actions older than a set number of days.

That means two things for a merchant who wants to know who edited a product last month. A busy store can push an older edit off the list. And the help page describes each entry as an action with a time and a name, not as a before and after. If a title went from one thing to another, the log tells you an action happened to that product, and you open the product to see what it says now.

## Why the name sometimes says "Shopify"

Sometimes the log names Shopify itself instead of a person or an app. Shopify says this is normal behavior in certain scenarios and does not necessarily mean someone accessed your account without permission. Its page lists background jobs that process bulk edits, app or channel syncing, theme changes made in the Online Store channel and market changes among the usual reasons.

So a "Shopify" entry beside a product edit is worth a second look, but it is not an answer on its own. Check which apps you have that sync products, and whether a bulk edit was running.

## Stock counts have their own history

If the question is about a quantity rather than a title or a price, Shopify keeps a separate adjustment history. Open the product, open the variant if it has them, make sure inventory tracking is on, and click **View adjustment history**. Each entry shows who made the adjustment under Created by: the staff member, app or sales channel. Shopify shows the last 180 days.

## What Actorly adds

Actorly is a Shopify app that keeps a searchable record of what changed in your store. When Shopify tells Actorly that a record changed, Actorly reads the record again and keeps the old value and the new value. Shopify's change notice usually says what changed but not who did it, so Actorly reads Shopify's activity log about every hour and lines the two up.

The match is by record and time: an activity log entry for the same record, within 90 seconds of the change. What you see depends on what the log holds.

- **One matching entry that names someone:** the name, with the word **Likely**.
- **Several entries that all name the same person or app:** that name, with the word **Possible**. Actorly knows they were working on the record in that window, not that this exact change was theirs.
- **Several entries naming different people:** Actorly does not pick the nearest one. The change stays "Not attributed yet" while it keeps checking.
- **No entry after 24 hours:** the answer becomes **Unknown**, and it stays Unknown. Actorly does not fill it in later.

This is a correlation, and Actorly shows it as one. A name beside Likely means the log and the change lined up closely in time. The name is always shown next to its confidence word, never alone.

## When the answer is Unknown

Unknown is a real answer. Shopify gives a display name only: never a staff ID, and never whether that person is the store owner, so two people who share a name look the same to Actorly. And for 17 kinds of record, including inventory, menus, URL redirects, files, themes and store settings, Shopify records nobody at all, so Actorly can tell you what changed and when, but not who.

Actorly's claim about "who" is for product changes, and only when Shopify reports it. The [Coverage page](https://www.actorly.app/coverage) shows each part of a store and says whether the limit is Shopify's or Actorly's own choice. The [docs](https://www.actorly.app/docs#who) explain how to read the name and the word beside it.

## What Actorly cannot see

Actorly records changes from the day you install it. It cannot show history from before that, and it cannot see inside another app's private settings.

## What it costs

Looking is free. The free plan, Actorly Watch, keeps three months of history, and the search, the old and new values and the "who" are the same on both plans. Actorly Restore is $29 a month or $240 a year and keeps unlimited history while you stay on it. Shopify does the billing. See [pricing](https://www.actorly.app/#pricing).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I see who changed a product price in Shopify?

Shopify's activity log may name the person, app or channel behind an action, but it does not show the old and new price. A price lives on a variant, and the [price history guide](https://www.actorly.app/blog/what-shopify-keeps-when-someone-edits-a-price) goes through what Shopify keeps and what Actorly records.

### Does a name next to "Likely" mean that person made the change?

It means an entry in Shopify's activity log matched the change closely in time. Actorly did not see who did it, which is why it shows a confidence word and not a bare name.

### Can I see changes made before I installed Actorly?

No. The record starts at install. For the stock history Shopify keeps itself, see the adjustment history above.

### Why does Actorly say Unknown for some changes?

Shopify does not record who made certain kinds of change, or it gave no entry to match within 24 hours. Actorly says Unknown and does not change that answer later.
